I create memorials to intimacy and its painful absence: the complicated nature of humanity as manifested through connection to others. My work—an assemblage of film photography, illustration, and poetry—highlights the inherent human need for such a connection, and the agonizing loneliness that arises when it is lacking. I am fascinated with the way that memory disrupts our ability to fully and truthfully freeze moments in our mind; photography provides a momentary glimpse of true memory, driving how we understand our present.
As an Israeli-American who returned to Israel a decade ago, my works are inspired by my own fragmented childhood, direct experiences of uprooting and alienation, and a longing for a home that no longer exists (and perhaps never did). While my memories and relationships influence my work, it is my interest in the process of connection and the poetics of analog technology that motivates my continued practice.
